Lee County, Alabama sheriff-elect says he will end the sheriff's office Flock contract when he takes office
On Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2026, Lee County Sheriff-elect Cam Hunt said in a Facebook post that when he takes office in January he intends to terminate the Lee County Sheriff's Office contract with Flock Safety, "subject to the applicable contractual requirements," according to 1819 News. Hunt said his concerns go beyond the cameras to Flock as a company, its approach to collecting and managing data, and the implications of trusting private corporations with information gathered through government surveillance. He said license-plate recognition has legitimate uses, such as finding missing people and recovering stolen vehicles, and that the office will keep using other technology under clear policies and oversight. Hunt defeated longtime Sheriff Jay Jones in the May Republican primary and is unopposed in the general election. In late August, Sheriff Jones dismissed a deputy after an internal audit found the deputy violated agency policy on using information from the Flock camera system, WTVM reported. No contract has been terminated yet. As of publication, Flock Safety had not issued a public response to this announcement in the sources we reviewed.
