State probe of a former Charlotte officer's alleged Flock misuse turns up alleged racist texts among CMPD officers
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation's case against a former Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officer who is charged with a misdemeanor of illegally accessing a government computer after allegedly running an undercover detective's plate through Flock and the state CJLEADS database for a drug-investigation target, has surfaced text messages involving six CMPD officers. The SBI confirmed to Spectrum News 1 that it collected data from the former officer's phone and shared it with CMPD, which found the messages; the North Carolina NAACP president says they contain racial slurs. WBTV, citing anonymous sources, reported that several officers were recommended for termination or quit. The former officer has resigned and has been charged, not convicted; the SBI says its criminal investigation remains ongoing. CMPD does not own Flock cameras but can access other agencies' Flock devices under an agreement.
