Amelia County, Virginia sheriff's office ends its Flock contract effective immediately

The Amelia County Sheriff's Office said it is ending its use of Flock Safety automated license plate recognition (ALPR) cameras effective immediately, ending its contract with Flock on Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026, WWBT 12 On Your Side reported. The office said the technology is a highly effective tool and that there have been no instances of improper use by its employees, but that public concerns about data access, retention and privacy mean the cons now outweigh the pros. The cameras will stay up until Flock Safety personnel remove them, but they will not record anything. The report did not say how many cameras the county has. Amelia is the latest Virginia agency to drop Flock this month, after Henrico County and the Nelson County Sheriff's Office. We have not seen the sheriff's office's own statement. As of publication, Flock Safety had not issued a public response to this decision in the sources we reviewed.
