Riverside, Illinois trustees vote 4-2 not to renew the village's Flock contract
On Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026, the Riverside, Ill. village board voted 4-2 not to renew the village's contract with Flock Safety for its two automatic license plate reader cameras, the Riverside-Brookfield Landmark reported. The contract expires on its own terms on May 31, 2027, and the cameras stay in use until then. The board will discuss whether to sunset the cameras immediately at its next meeting on Thursday, Nov. 5, and trustees directed staff to start looking into alternatives to Flock, including local cameras, the Landmark reported. Trustees Cristin Evans, Joseph Fitzgerald, Jill Mateo and Aberdeen Marsh-Ozga voted not to renew; Trustees Alex Gallegos and Elizabeth Kos voted to budget funds for renewal in fiscal year 2027. Earlier in October, the village said it had revoked access to its camera data for law enforcement agencies outside Illinois and now requires every Flock search by a Riverside officer to include an existing police report number and an explanation of its law enforcement purpose. That followed a resident's rebuttal letter, built on Flock records obtained through a public records request, which said Riverside's camera data was searched 153,600 times in August 2026 and pointed to searches by Indiana's Lake County Sheriff's Office with the stated reason "LMAO"; the village called those searches inappropriate and said it no longer shares data with that office, the Landmark reported. Trustee Evans had said in a statement that the village's safeguards were insufficient to protect resident and visitor data from misuse.
