Investigation maps 512 Flock cameras run by 18 police agencies across Coastal Georgia
The Current GA published a two-month investigation on Oct. 19, 2026 finding a network of 512 Flock Safety cameras operated by 18 law enforcement agencies across Coastal Georgia's seven counties. The newsroom mapped camera locations from records confirmed with the agencies after more than 60 public records requests; Savannah, Pooler and Port Wentworth declined to give locations for the 203 cameras in their cities. Savannah police run the most, 124 cameras, at least 50 of them installed through a Savannah College of Art and Design grant, and had spent more than $1 million on Flock as of August 2026, records show. Glynn County police run 85, the Effingham County Sheriff's Office 49 and Chatham County police 41. Agencies confirmed they share data with hundreds of other agencies in Georgia, out of state and at the federal level. Local Flock policies range from a single page to 26 pages; The Current found that neither the Savannah nor the Richmond Hill police department has an ALPR-specific policy. Savannah's records office estimated it averages about 2 million lines of search results a month. Savannah police fired six employees over alleged Flock misuse in August, and five have appealed, with some citing a lack of Flock training; the department says it is writing a policy to release with a Flock transparency portal. Bryan and McIntosh County sheriff's offices said they revised their policies after misuse reports elsewhere.
