Macon County, North Carolina sheriff's office fires employee after finding Flock plate-reader misuse
The Macon County Sheriff's Office said on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026, that it fired an employee after an internal investigation found a complaint of license plate reader misuse to be founded (FOX Carolina, WLOS). The office said a credible outside agency alerted it on Oct. 16; the employee, a deputy according to FOX Carolina, was placed on administrative leave before Sheriff Brent Holbrooks ordered the firing (FOX Carolina, WLOS). The office did not describe the searches. WLOS said it asked whether charges were filed; none were reported. Macon County commissioners voted unanimously on July 14 to defund the county's Flock program; WLOS reported 12 county-owned cameras were to be removed, while four on school property remained.
