San Diego councilmember flips; majority may cancel Flock contract
Councilmember Stephen Whitburn, who previously voted to keep San Diego's Flock automated license-plate readers, said Tuesday he wants the cameras turned off and the contract canceled. Voice of San Diego reported his shift creates a simple majority that could cancel the deal; a Public Safety Committee review is expected in November and a full Council vote in December. Police Chief Scott Wahl and Mayor Todd Gloria defended the program, saying ALPRs have helped solve hundreds of cases and that SDPD has not shared ALPR data for immigration purposes.
