San Diego council committee votes to end the city's Flock license plate reader contract
San Diego City Council's Budget and Government Efficiency Committee voted unanimously on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026, to turn off the city's automated license plate readers and end its Flock Safety contract (KPBS; NBC 7 San Diego). The proposal from Councilmember Henry Foster III still needs a full City Council vote, and it is unclear when that will happen (KPBS). Councilmember Stephen Whitburn's switch earlier this month could give a 5-4 majority, but Mayor Todd Gloria, who opposes the change, can veto a council resolution, and an override takes six of nine votes (NBC 7; KPBS). Police Chief Scott Wahl called the committee's decision short-sighted (NBC 7).
